Mackenzie Sol - The Other Side - Music Video
OBJECTIVE
Make the “impossible” one‑shot music video for Mackenzie Sol a reality.
Deliver a single, continuous take—no cuts, no VFX, no green screen—shot entirely in one studio on a compressed eight‑day schedule. The camera never stops, moving through multiple sets, live wardrobe changes, and precisely timed performance beats, all locked to the track. Translate a highly technical concept into a high‑energy, organic music video with style, tenacity, and heart while remaining technically impressive.
Achieve this with a high‑speed cinema robot on 20 feet of track, programming 1M+ data points, and crafting a meticulous choreography of camera, talent, wardrobe, lighting, and practical transitions that reads effortless on screen. Success is bold engineering in service of the song: a fluid, immersive visual narrative where every frame syncs perfectly yet retains human immediacy. The tight eight‑day timeline and single‑studio constraint amplify the challenge—rapid build, intense rehearsals, precision programming, and one focused shoot day—to create a one‑shot that feels inevitable despite its improbability.
STRATEGY
The Most Unique Pre‑Production
To realize this concept we built a pre‑production workflow unlike anything we’d used before. We broke the 3:52 track into a frame‑accurate timeline—23.98 frames per second, 5,563 frames total—and previsualized every movement: where talent would stand, which of the three sets would appear at each moment, what props and furniture would occupy the space, and how the camera would interact with it all. From that blueprint we mapped a single, continuous camera move that spans the entire song.
The result: a camera move locked to the music, shifting through distinct set moments and prop environments while talent remains in motion—yet the whole sequence reads as seamless.
The Tech
We executed the move with a Cinebot Max on 20 feet of track. This 7‑axis robotic arm can carry a 50 lb camera package and deliver frame‑accurate moves—positioning camera, zoom, and focus precisely in 3D space. Programming the final move took four days and produced over one million data points.
Crucially, despite the machine’s precision, the finished piece had to feel alive—not mechanical.
The Set
We built three separate sets around the robot and its track to enable uninterrupted transitions during motion. At the end of the video we reveal the full studio, exposing the practical sets and remnants of each environment—proof the whole film was captured in‑camera with no greenscreen.
One‑Day Shoot
Although programming consumed four days, the shoot itself was completed in a single day. All three sets were built, dressed, and lit with distinct looks to enhance the sense of traveling between locations.
Working with Talent
Makenzie Sol delivered a natural, high‑energy performance while working alongside a high‑speed cinema robot. He hit precise marks, engaged safely and confidently with the rig, and collaborated closely with the technical and creative teams to remain perfectly in sync.
The Results
The final video is both a technical milestone and an organic, high‑energy visual experience—proof that advanced engineering can amplify rather than overpower creative intent when a team is aligned.
The music video for “Other Side” was filmed entirely using a Cinebot as the main camera making Sol the first artist in history to film an entire music video using this new form of technology as the main camera. In a bold creative move, the entire music video was filmed using a Cinebot from In Color Studios delivering a visual experience unlike anything shown in today's music scene.
Fresh off his appearance on the 2024 season of American Idol on ABC/Disney+, Mackenzie Sol continues to push creative boundaries with "Other Side." The Cinebot-famous for its high-speed, cinematic camera work on red carpets and major award shows-brings the video to life with electrifying slow-motion shots and mesmerizing visual effects. Sol's dynamic performance is amplified by the Cinebot’s signature sweeping angles, delivering an immersive, cutting-edge look that perfectly matches the song's emotional intensity.
Music Video Creative Concept
The Concept and creative for ‘the other side’ music video came from In Color Studios and their creative director Ed Gregory. “The concept was to create a one shot music while switching out sets, locations, wardrobe and talent without using any green screen or CGI. Everything in the video is created in camera, which is technically incredibly difficult. With 4 days of pre-production to program the motion and the robot itself and just a single day to shoot the video. The end result of the video is a seamless moving one shot with the camera moves through locations, lighting, and performance. At the very end of the video, we chose to turn the camera around to show the full studio to show that this was a real location with a real set. We loved working with Mackenzie Sol on this project”, says Ed Gregory
Sol is the first singer ever to use a Cinebot to make a music video. On that, he had this statement to say: “To actually shoot my own music video with one thanks to Ed and In Coloor Studios… that’s crazy. The cinebot just makes everything look insane it caught every little emotion and movement. ‘ Other Side’ is about seeing things differently, and this video totally brings that to life”, said Sol.
Sol continues, “The Cinebot just makes everything look insane; it caught every little emotion and movement. ‘ Other Side’ is about seeing things differently, and this video totally brings that to life.”
"I wanted to create something visually stunning and truly different for my fans," says Sol. “The Cinebot allowed us to capture every emotion, every movement, in a way that feels larger than life. 'Other Side' is about seeing things from a new perspective-and this video brings that idea to the screen.
The "Other Side" music video will premiere on Mackenzie Sol's official YouTube channel on November 7. Fans can expect a bold new chapter in Sol's artistic journey, blending innovative technology with heartfelt storytelling.
